The Bloody Sunday was not only in Russian history. Exactly 50 years ago the events in the Northern Irish city of Derry, known as Bloody Sunday took place.
On that day, soldiers of the 1st Battalion of the British Parachute Regiment shot and killed a peaceful demonstration of local residents who had come to the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march. The British later claimed that the soldiers had been instigated by nationalist demonstrators but none of the soldiers were injured, whereas 13 demonstrators were killed on the spot (four of them children, one priest; five were shot in the back), one died in hospital and 13 others were injured.
This event provoked the activation of the Irish Republican Army and led to an escalation of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Below we attach footage of the shooting and the unrest that began in its immediate aftermath.
